In today's news post, we will be featuring an Environment Map utilizing CryENGINE 3 titled: Forbidden Lands, which is being developed by CryDev user Wenda.
Being inspired by Shadow of the Colossus and ICO; Wenda states that his goal is to create a medieval landscape with a big castle in the background, including some ruins and vegetation in the foreground. He also states that to this environment map he will be adding a cluster of floating islands with one or two houses with some vegetation such as trees, ground plants with ruins and scattered rocks.
Wenda states that the grass wind needs to be tweaked more and he is trying to achieve a more uniform wave for the wind animation.
Working on the floating islands for his environment map; Wenda explains some of the steps using 3dcoat and mudbox.
1. Blocked out the islands in 3dcoat by using their voxel based sculpting system then exported to mudbox for detailing and refining.
2. Added some details in mudbox.
3. Low poly mesh with normal map.
4. Base color painting in mudbox WIP (unlit view, diffuse only). This color map will be overlayed on top of gray scale detail textures with their normal maps in the material editor.
From the images and videos released so far, Wenda's environment map looks stunning.
