Post Topic: C4 Engine - Crytek take notes
PostPosted 30.04.2012, 07:28
Just thought that I would post this here just for comparisons sake.

So recently I have been looking around at various engines other than Cryengine and UDK.

The C4 engine has caught my eye due to the following -

* C++ Source code access with Standard and Professional licenses.
* No Royalties. Just one upfront price.
* The Engine is real time in terms of physics, lighting, etc.
* The source code is extremely well documented.
* Bug fixes / Hot fixes are very often.
* Major updates such as Linux support (Which is being implemented in version 2.9) occur often as well.
* Very active and Knowledgeable community.
* Very well documented via wiki.
* Support is top notch - Eric Lengyel the engines creator will more than often provide direct support via the forums.

Err yeah but it looks like its 5 years behind Cryengine..
http://www.terathon.com/c4engine/shot.p ... st/forest3

Also are there any actual games that have been released with this engine?

There are many other engine out there at similar prices and offer the same things but they are no where near the quality of Cryengine or SDK or probally unity for that matter...

Still if your on a budget and really really want the source code then sure maybe its a good option.. saying that i think i would go with Torque 3d instead of that as its cheaper and looks better..

Tho good find dont think i came accross C4 when i was looking at different engines.

Some 3D Models I have done.

This engine seems far behind CryEngine 3. Both in technology, ease of use and UI.

Looks more like bad art than anything. Shadows and lighting seems good. About on par with Cryengine sans SSAO.

Hello.
At least this C4 engine provides the source code..
How much exactly cost a CE3 licence with source code included?

If I had a pound for every time I needed engine source code access in the Free SDK, I'd have exactly one pound. That was working on CryMono. And the issue has since been fixed.

Out now! CryENGINE Game Programming with C++, C#, and Lua
Ex-Crytek, now with Deep Silver Dambuster Studios

Ahh!
But anyway you didnt answer how much it cost to have the access to the full code.

Several millions, I guess.

So. When (If ?) CryMono will make into main engine ?
Noo I'm just cruious, because it pretty seems legit compared to old LUA.

If they are smart (and I guess they are), full engine access prices are set up individually for each customer. You simply cannot expect everyone will be able to pay 1mln $. And it's better to sell for 50k $, than do not sell at all.

The final result doesnt depend on the engine, it depends on the one who use it... :))

Compare a Game Engine with a canvas, brushes and paints:

The artist number 1, equipped with cheapest and low quality canvas, brushes and paints, can make an awesome and wonderfull piece of art ; meanwhile the Artist number 2, equipped with expensive canvas, brushes and paints, can make a total piece of crap.

Well I presume you can cook up any shader you want with the engine (unlike a certain other). So not really a huge issue.

You can make shaders for CE3 right now, that's not an issue. (Ruan or Adam must confirm)

An btw its been said tons of times that CE3 Is a Royalty engine, barring a deal with Crytek itself its 20% royalty. They may have an up front license but that would likely be for large companies or large well funded projects.
