Just a little update, .BAD. is starting form scratch with the shotgun silencer as to make all he did was modify his dsg-1 silencer mod so it threw up some errors!

Having some problems, the latest one which ive tested for .BAD. allowed you to see and use the shotugn, but the customisation menu was odd (with the silencer part jumping about) and with it equipped or unequipped it made no difference (you couldnt see the silencer and it didnt effect the sound).

I think .BAD. is going to release it when it works on my game as it will hopefully then work for everyone!

Sorry to bump, but I thought I'd add a bit of input from the practical standpoint.

A suppressor is used on a weapon to reduce (to a degree) the noise of the weapon, which in CQB is very disorienting (get a real rifle some time, open a window, close the doors, pull the trigger and behold). To get that truly "quiet" effect we see in Hollywood all the time, you really need to use subsonic ammunition. While a suppressor will dampen some of the noise involved in exploding powders (nose will still vibrate through the chamber, however), once a bullet hits sonic speeds it will crack as it breaks the sound barrier. Unfortunately, subsonic ammunition does not have the gas output required to cycle most semiautomatic or automatic weapons. Here is a video:

That being said, putting a silencer on the bolt action DSG-1 would be a tad pointless -- you would have to lower the round velocity considerably, losing rang, accuracy, and overall stopping power.

In the case that the above video refuses to work: http://youtube.com/watch?v=PEoh-MmpJNM

M.

@Cheomesh...yes you are right you lose accuracy, speed and stopping power, but just if you take the subsonic rounds...not if you take the normal rounds (you take subsonic rounds to avoid that the enemy hears it if it flys by, because without them you always hear this cracking noise) and i don't think that any of the weapons in crysis uses subsonic rounds.

Whilst cheomesh is totally right, ill again bring it back to the point that i will settle for slightly lower realism in a game which contains, basically, a superhuman suit and aliens!

I also never intended for it to be totally silenced, just silenced in the sense that the noise is different (which is what silencers and normal ammunition do) so it doesnt draw every Korean from miles around!

Oh, and a little update on the WIP, Ronin is having to learn the coding for the weapons as for some reason his DSG-1 silencer works fine, but editing that code for the shotgun threw up loads of errors!

that's because the sniper rifle was probably initially equipped with the silencer and at some point crytek decided to remove it.

Please, please, I would LOVE it if this shotgun silencer was modeled after the one in No Country for Old Men. Beautiful sound that would be great in-game. Chigurh is such a badass

Haha, such a good film. Cutting the sound out is a good idea too, i might try that. Sadly though its a huge exaggeration of what a silencer of that size could do!

All I have to say is that the shotgun in the "Universal @$$ kicker". In every game that has firearms, in some way, shape, or form, there is a shotgun. A shotgun with a silencer is not ENTIRELY out of the question, but the fact is that a shotgun's silencer is relatively large, bulky, and almost downright useless due to the fact of how low the strength of the blast is compared to how little it muffles the sound of the blast.

A silencer for a shotgun would be useless. Why? One reason. Shotguns are meant for CQB, and the enemies will know you are there and shoot at you. Then your position is given away. Plus, it takes away 99% of the coolness of a shotgun.

I always thought the sheer power of a shotgun would either just blow a silencer off the barrel, or destroy the silencer itself. A shotgun is made to cover a wide area, right?

I still like it, I guess I'm attracted to the arcade aspect of it. :)

The spread of a shotgun is effected by both the shot used and the length of the barrel, and a silencer isnt blown off as its basically a continuation of the barrel but with an added outer-layer and a 'honey-comb' stucture to damp the sound.

They arent hugely effective (to the extent of a pistol one, or subsonic ammunition), they just alter the sound of the shot making it less obvious.
