Post Topic: New shader - Cel / Toon shader.
PostPosted 08.10.2008, 20:36
This is a VERY beta release of a toon shader. It seems to work well for characters and animated objects but not so good on solids (Z thrashing).

Unpack this into your Crysis directory. It consists of two files, the toon.cfx and toongradient.dds files.

EDIT: This is just a shader for mods to use in their mods. It makes no changes to the game by itself! Use this if you want to make a toon-style mod like Viewtiful Joe, or Wind Waker, etc.

As usual, you are free to use this in your mods as you see fit except that I ask you to share any improvements with us all and credit me as appropriate.

Send me bug reports, bug fixes and/or suggestions for improvement.

Edit: Fixed some bad logic in shader. Added pencil / paint daub modifiers (you'd need to manually edit the shader to use these. Later I'll fix that to make them easier to use, or split them into 3 shaders)

Oh, there's one other caveat about the shader.

When replacing certain other textures, details and features can be rendered useless.

For instance, clothing uses detail and decal textures. The toon shader does NOT. This affects, among other things:

nanosuit: speed/strength FX are lost

Korean soldiers: fabric texture lost. Camo paint lost. Uniform appears gray (I think it overlays some other texture to get the camo looking an appropriate color? Not sure, have to look at it)

US Soldiers: Not tested, probably are setup in a similiar format.

It can be edited to make use of this, or the cloth shader could be edited to add a toony look. Probably easier except possibly for the addition of the edge shell, that was a pain in the ass. Probably more than it needed to be but I'm new to shaders.

Someone more knowledgeable could improve on it.

As usual, you are free to use this in your mods as you see fit except that I ask you to share any improvements with us all and credit me as appropriate.

I apologize, the level of information I provided assumed that people were keeping up with several other threads.

All this is is a new shader and a new texture map sampler for the shader. This is for modders to use in making mods if they want their mods to have a cartoony look. To use it, you need to use the material editor and change the shader from the shader drop down list.

(think Viewtiful Joe, or Wind Waker, etc)

In fact, I recall several people asking about just such a shader in the past.

Might be in the wrong forum though, so I'm going to see if there might not be a better place for it, and maybe ask a mod to move it?

Updated shader file: fixed a couple of things and added some support for pencil / paint style filters. (very crude, have to uncomment certain sections of the shader. Want to fix that later)

Thanks James-Ryan for moving it!

Good work. I hope with developments like this, it will be easier to make something non-shooter like for Crysis - just like for FC before.

A game like what? Crysis?

This is a modder's forum. We're here to mod. People are interested in making cartoony mods.

If you don't like this, you'll TRULY hate the shader that I really want to make

All of this is just practice for my evil shader masterpiece

I've probably said too much already. Now ima have to kill you :(

Anyway, here's an update + pic.

I'm really thinking it would just be best to do a single shader that acts as a filter and would overlay the player's screen. Problem is, even if I make the shader I'm not quite sure how to get it onto the player's screen. Nightvision works that way but only part of it is coded in the game code. It disappears into the CryEngine 2's shader engine and I'm not sure I can put in a new shader like that without access to the CE2 code.

Anyway, here's a shot of such a filter in action. This is NOT done with photoshop filters. The nanosuit textures still have the original toon shader but Strickland and the navy guy do NOT. The alien Hunter does NOT. I replaced the nightvision code with my filter code to test with.

edit: It's all desaturated because I was playing around with other toon shader concepts at someone's request in another thread and I actually meant to post the results there :)
