Thanks very much. I will post results as soon as my project (university) takes shape.

I Know that CWright the famos WWII flight sim modder of crysis has made an app that will stich together NASA Radar telescope land height maps in the form of displacement maps, and then he can make a solid polymesh object for Softimage XSI to be used as the terrain mesh. The limit of the size of these USED to be 100km X 100km. I think the terrain/mesh limit is gone now in CE3 BTW.
I think s great way to do planets would be to make Giant polymesh Stiched together 8192X8192 displacement maps to make one giant mesh in XSI Mod tool (Or his app) like Cwright has done, and then somehow Sphereize the sitched together dis maps into a ball or a planet. That is to say turn what was a giant flat plane of a world mesh into a round globe. This way you could REALLY fly to the planet from space and vice versa, and when you are at ground level, it would seem like a normal terrain map/world mesh. Keep in mind at about 400 miles and hour, it would take a space ship 15 mins go from end to end of a 100km X 100km map.
Some use of LODs for the Ploymesh displacementmap/heightmap would need to be used i reckon when far away from the polymesh planet.
Lets figure out a seamless useable way to fly from a planet surface into space and vice versa.

You are talking about using some serious system resources. Also while there are games made with the Cryengine that utilize seamless worlds I really wouldn't know about how to implement it. i know that there are several other posts kinda asking for the same thing and the answer is the same across the board.

A tip about starfields. To make a starfield look cool and more realistic do not just make all stars white and the same size. In reality there are bright and dim stars as well as stars of various specific colours. Having stars all white makes everything look flat when in reality, brightness levels change for stars close to us and those distant. Check out these images as reference: http://www.starnetblog.com/tileable/sea ... -textures/

Alright, time to show off mine. In case anyone's wondering, I used a 16K (16348 x 8192) diffuse and bump texture. I'm still working on a specular one, but Photoshop is crashing like crazy. Also, the atmosphere is made out of a FogVolume (thanks, the_grim), but I'm considering a custom fresnel shader. Some advice: - If you have a large scene, do not use a standard dynamic light. If you use a standard light, you will have to increase the range, and at 6000+ it produces artifacts. (See here)
I customized the daylight system to match a space scene and removed the GI. - If you plan to do a still, you should definitely keep the stars. If it's an animation, reduce them. More stars appear if the camera's is set on a slow shutter speed.
- Go wild with it!

Also, does anyone know how to apply (or fake) anamorphism?

Dear Rives, if you do not wish to reveal their secrets, could you please put up their own planet's atmosphere and lighting, I do not get even close to repeat anything. thank you I write through the translator, i do not understand if you did:)

Quote by half0: Ok so this tutorial is going to show you how to do many things but in overall show you how to make a nice space scene to use. I have also included everything needed to do this and attachted them to the link below. I tried to upload the zip file as an attachment on here but I guess the size of it wouldn't let me. http://www.filedropper.com/filesfortutorialCould you please reupload tutorial files, coz its says that archive is damaged. Thanks

Could someone please re-upload the ZIP file? Like it has been said above the file is corrupted and does not work. It would be really nice if someone could do that.
Thanks

Thanks I agree, I am trying to work on a space scene in the free SDK and it looks awful. It would be awesome if someone could upload the file again.

"Lets figure out a seamless useable way to fly from a planet surface into space and vice versa. -Renwood " Hi Renwood, and everyone else, I'm working on precisely that. As you mentioned, I will be looking at creating large planetary objects by seamlessly attaching large sections, using a similar method to my flight sim sceneries. It should be possible to add photoreal real world scenery sections to the planetary sphere e.g. Cape Canaveral. As a matter of interest, my Automap scenery tool already supports spherical curvature, and I can probably extend this to make sections of a sphere. The trick will be to make detailed scenery areas fit into the global scenery in a natural way. As the whole thing is programmed in Lua, and all planetary objects are placed into entity slots, it should be possible. . Meanwhile, I've started by constructing a basic animated solar system, programmed with Lua. See this short video: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4380128/Videos/SolarSystemA.aviIt's just a start and the project will take months. My aim is to simulate all aspects of space flight: walking on planetary surfaces and in zero G, atmospheric flight, boost into orbit, enter other spacecrarft or space stations and boost off to other planets. Should be fun! Chris
