Post Topic: View player's legs by looking down
PostPosted 07.03.2012, 04:56
I'm wondering why you don't see your own legs when you completely look down.
What's the particular reason they hide legs ?
What I'm trying to achieve here is to see player's body and legs just like in real-life. How do you see your own body and legs when you look down, just like that.

The method that I tried was to switch to 3rd Person Camera View but didn't translate the camera backwards in order to see the whole player from back. What I did was translating camera a little bit forward from head position (Just like putting camera in player's eye position) but the result is not good.

Any suggestions?

You have to create a false pair of legs. You have to make it so the player can't see his own player model besides his arms, and then have him see a false pair of legs that are scaled down to the right size.

Just take some pictures with a camera strapped to your face and see the limits of how far your neck can stretch, and see the full body motion required to see your legs, and incorporate that into your design.

This was the method used to create all the arms and legs for Mirror's Edge. There is also a concept on gmod which you can see http://www.garrysmod.org/downloads/?a=view&id=110052 there.

you don't have to create false legs. Use the same method you see when you die. (The viewport is lined up to the eye position and the near clip plane has to be set right). Then also the shadows will line up (but you'll have normal quality arms and weapons)

Use the eyebones to get the position and then offset the camera.

Here's a topic about the same subject, I suggest a couple different ways to approach the issue:

viewtopic.php?f=315&t=83463

Custom first-person model using the player legs model as a base (character editor + editing player.lua):

Changing the 3rd person camera position to align with the player head:

The simplest way of achieving that you see your own legs in FP is to open the character's cdf file, and put the legs chr into the base skeleton. Usually the base skeleton is only some invisible mesh, but if you put your legs there, you will see them.
