Hello CryENGINEERS! Early on last month, forum member atsest went ahead and started a community challenge for solids that we thought looked like a lot of fun. We'd like to expand on this and put up even more of a challenge to further put your skills to the test! Cooked up from the mind of our News Lead, Liam, this new competition will involve solids but with more restrictions to make it more challenging. The restrictions you face will be creative space! The GoalYour goal is to create a room made out of solids with the following dimensions: 14m X 10m X 4m. You are allowed to place windows in the room. You are allowed to place whatever you want outside of the room for background scenery but it will only be viewable through the windows (i.e; screenshots outside of the room do not count). The ultimate goal is to make the room as interesting, creative, cool, fun/funny, realistic, etc, as you can. The staff team will review the entries and agree on a room that they think is the best, as well as two runner ups. Here's a quick example that Liam put together: The RewardYour reward will be fame and admiration among your peers! Well, that and a whole bunch of awesome Roccat gear and some Crytek merchandise! - 1st Place - Roccat Kulo Stereo Headset, Roccat Kone+ Mouse, Roccat Sota Mouse Pad, CryDev t-shirt and signed copy (by the Yerlis & the Tracys) of the CryENGINE Cookbook
- 2nd Place - Roccat Kone+ Mouse, Roccat Sota Mouse Pad and a CryDev t-shirt
- 3rd Place - Roccat Kova+ Mouse, Roccat Sota Mouse Pad and a CryDev t-shirt
The DetailsTo go over the rules in point form: - Room made out of 6 solids with the maximum dimensions: 14m (length), 10m (width), 4m (height).
- Holes can be placed in the room (wall windows, roof skylights, etc).
- Either the CryENGINE 3 Free SDK or Crysis 2 Mod SDK Sandbox may be used.
- Level will need to be available for download by CryDev staff if requested.
- 1st, 2nd and 3rd place will be judged by the CryDev staff team.
- Competition starts today, Monday, 5th September.
- Competition entries close Monday 12th September @ 4pm GMT.
- Entries are to be posted in a new thread in the Competitions Forum.
- Entries must provide a screenshot with the wall/roof solids selected to show dimensions (see example below)
Need Some Help?Never used solids before? Looking for a crash course? In case you missed it, community member Duruk put together a really handy solids tutorial and you can read up on that here. Get Going! That about covers it! You have a little bit over 1 week to make the most awesome room you've ever made and there's some awesome prizes up for grabs so if you want to be in with a chance to win you'd best get started right away This thread can be used for discussion on the competition but please note, entries posted in this thread will not be accepted so please create a new thread for your entry!

Does scripted gameplay count or is the competition only about screenshots / how the room looks like?

The solids are only there to provide dimension limitations. You can put a modeled window in the hole if you like, so long as it's within the specified dimensions

Does it have to be a single room or can this volume contain more rooms ?

So you make the room out of solids, but can put actual objects (like that desk and chair) in it? Or is it like the last one where ONLY solids are allowed (inside the room)?

I guess not. They wrote 6 solids, and i cant believe that the table in the midlle of the example pic by Liam is made out of solids. I i guess you can put whatever you want inside the room.

Is it the INSIDE of the solid area that needs to be that size, or the outside? Also, why don't people just make it out of 1 solid using the subtract option.... Also, are custom objects allowed, or should that be all solids-based?

Some answers to your questions: Put in whatever you want. The basic 6 walls still need to stand after you're done. Tricking the rules is appreciated, but still obey them. Feel free to put an entire artificial world with ocean and sun in there, but the walls have to stand. Quote by s87: Does scripted gameplay count or is the competition only about screenshots / how the room looks like? Only the end result, which is a screenshot and proof of the measurements. This is a purely artistical challenge. Quote by Tiesto: This is awsome! i will be entering. Just to clarify , can we put as many objects as we want inside the room ? and can the window be a model or does the window need to be made from solids also ? Feel free to put as much as you can in there. And yes, window-models can be used. As I said, the basic walls still need to be there. What the basic wall is in the end, or how you define it, is limited by your creativity. If you want it, use that thing as a skybox or w/e. Quote by VinoBob: Does it have to be a single room or can this volume contain more rooms ? Put in as much you want to. The solid is not necessarily a wall of a room, it's whatever you're doing with it. Quote by doomlord52: So you make the room out of solids, but can put actual objects (like that desk and chair) in it? Or is it like the last one where ONLY solids are allowed (inside the room)? Basic walls = Solids, everything else is up to you. Quote by Zurginator: Is it the INSIDE of the solid area that needs to be that size, or the outside? Also, why don't people just make it out of 1 solid using the subtract option.... Also, are custom objects allowed, or should that be all solids-based? You may choose the thickness of your walls as it suits your concept. And custom objects are allowed, but the 6 basic walls must be solids. You can also use the subtract option. Just provide proof on the measurements. If there are any further questions, just ask here. I'm excited to see what you guys come up with.

Ummm... rules are still vague.
Questions
- We can use both screenshot & video for entry? - We can use only 1 entry for this competition? - We can change shape of room freely within the size? Cube, Triangle, ok? - No window or hole is ok? This means, only inside the room. - Transpearent walls are ok?

I can hardly imagine that it's possible to create a triangle by following the measurements of a rectangle -It must be inside the solid construct, you can also use no windows at all. -depends on what you understand as transparent walls. Just making them invisible to circumvent the rules of the competition is not allowed. If you can build the transparency into the concept, then yes, i.e. an underwater room or similar. If you're in doubt, you can PM me with a rough screenshot of your idea and I'll tell you if it's okay or not. For the sake of fairness, I will simply reply with yes or no. I hope you understand. Quote by Zeph: Can they stand hidden on a separate layer? No To clarify: The idea of this competition is to be creative, even though there are heavy restrictions given. Put your imagination inside a box. Spin the box, cut the box, fill the box with water, create an artificial city, make a simple office room, a horror scene, cut stuff out so it's resembling a prison or whatever. Again, if you have questions, ask!

Might sound a little stupid but: Quote: Room made out of 6 solids with the maximum dimensions: 14m (length), 10m (width), 4m (height). Do the solids that make the room/box count...? =.= EDIT: NVM! I thought you could only use 6 solids for the entire project! My bad!
