Post Topic: [WIP] Level - Castaway Update
PostPosted 04.03.2008, 19:45

Welcome to another update for ZapWizard’s fantastic looking WIP singleplayer level, Castaway Island! Based upon the island used in the original film Cast Away, the series of missions is an entirely new singleplayer campaign using the luscious South Pacific island as its premise. As promised, we have been provided with screenshots of his new facility that has been built for one of the levels, plus a progress report on the status of the overall campaign.

Progress Report
Below is the quoted progress report taken from ZapWizard regarding the progress of every factor of the campaign (bare in mind this was taken from a 20th of February, so some details may differ).

  • Terrain: 90% complete, all tweaks now are just little things. -Updated the location of a few key areas of the map and edited accordingly.
  • Vegetation: 0% To be done after all areas are complete -No-change
  • Intro cinematic: 90% done, voices have to be finalized
  • Cavern: 0% I had to redo this as I change the path the player will follow.
  • Cavern cinematic 50%, AI character picked out, lines written, some scripting done.
  • Mine town: 75% Buildings laid out, added more details, still needs lots of clean-up. -No-change
  • Beach: 0% Needs to be done from scratch (again the path across the island changed)
  • Bridge: 90% done, waterfall still needs some work at the top. -no change
  • Prison camp: 75% AI flowgraphs for prisoners still needs lots of work
  • Docks: 50% Needs details
  • Facility: 20% Elevator mostly done, adding rooms, I need to link it all together.
  • Lab: 0% placeholder only (This is probably going to get cut from the map)
  • Sub-Pen: 75% -Moved it due to change in player path, but fortunately didn't require much editing.
  • Mine operations area: 0% Had to be re-done due to path change.
  • Old-Mine: 10% Voxel skeleton laid out, elevator placeholder setup -No change
  • Communications outpost: 75% Interior mostly complete.
  • End-Cut scene: 75% Prototype cutscene done, needs cleanup and voice work.
  • All Ai, 0%, no enemies placed yet, forbidden areas, idle actions, etc...
  • All sound environments: 0%
New Screenshots
As well as the promising report, the community has also been shown a sneak preview from one of the facilities inside his campaign. What’s even more intriguing about this is that no external modelling programs or solids were used in making it; it was built entirely from already existing objects. A testament to just how much Crytek included for us to play around with!

It's looking good, but we won't know for sure until it's released.

Looks like no one else is having a chance in the ICMC, if ZapWizard is thinking of submitting (which I find very likely) :D

Looks awesome. :))
(at least my chances looks pretty scr**ed, considered how much I have completed :P)

BTW I love you tutorials. They helped me alot, getting started

Thanks for the post, McGinge. The progress report is mostly accurate.

CryVild, yes I do plan on submitting it to the contest, it is the only thing really keeping me moving as I get burned out on the map sometimes. While my map is fairly detailed and there is a lot of unique stuff I am throwing in there, it remains to be seen how good it will really play as I haven't added AI into the mix yet.

Basas, the story isn't based on Castaway the movie in any way. I just used the island as terrain reference when making my map. The title Castaway is a reference to the movie since it's the same island, and you are a "castaway" stuck on the island after a plane crash.

Well May 20th was the deadline for the contest, it has been extended due to some SDK stuff.

Tom Hanks, works for FedEx, is on the last cargo flight home, plane crashes in the sea, Hanks washed up on beach, begin 1 hour 40+ minutes of him learning to survive...wont spoil the ending.

@ topic: This is truly the best looking map in development so far, 10/10 for every aspect of it as far as im concerned. Epic doesn't even do it justice.
