Post Topic: Chameleon Mod beta release Posted 26.09.2008, 04:13 |
Let's play 'Where's Nomad?'
Version 1.0 - Beta Chameleon Cloak Mod. Please submit feedback: bug reports and feedback on chameleon visual effect.
Instructions: To use, unpack the rar file to your Crysis directory. Use the included shortcut to run Crysis or load Chameleon from the Mods menu. Use the 'K' key to cycle cloak styles. If they won't cycle then try creating a new profile and then a new game.
Missing from mod menu. Reuploading corrected file. For now, please load by appending -mod chameleoncloak to the end of your shortcut target. Shortcut attached to this message
Provides 3 cloak styles Original - Near Total Invisibility. High energy usage, cannot attack Chameleon - Dynamic camo. Low energy usage, can attack through cloak Thermal - IR invisibility. Low energy usage. Can attack through cloak.
Chameleon is NOT invisible! Just changes the surface color to match the background. Should be VERY ineffective against AI, but I'm not sure that part is working properly so please give feedback on that. One other thing to watch out for is HDR settings: HDR settings can greatly affect the appearance. Seems ok at high settings.
HAS HAD NO TESTING IN ANY MULTIPLAYER ENVIRONMENT
Thermal frosts up your exterior and weapons so that aliens can't see you with their IR vision.
Fixes long standing but little known bug where NK suit helmets don't show nanosuit effects (strength, speed, etc)
Restores missing 'nanosuit defense effect'
No source code with this release, that will follow soon.

What is Nomad wearing??( I honestly have no idea, other than that he's cloaked with a ghillie suit on. And do you think you could attach an image with better quality?
I'm not online much. I only post if something catches my eye.

As soon as I get some better screenshots.
And no, it's not a ghillie suit. (someone has made one though)
No, it's something that's been talked about before on these forums.

Is it the original cloak from the aplha stage's? Like you become clear and like the suit becomes white and your suit takes the texture of the ground?

Isn't that taking the texture of the whatever is in front of opposite surface and applying it to the nanosuit?

The old version is in there btw as part of the cloth shader but it's hard to get it to return any useful colors. In fact, I suspect that the chameleon effect screenshot was somewhat staged, in that whoever took the shot had to position himself just right until it matched the surrounding environment. When I was playing with it, typically what would happen is that it would return weird colors like solid blue or purple, or ranging from yellow to green to blue. If you want to see what it looks like, just go edit normal nanosuit texture (and also the arms texture under weapons) in the sandbox material editor. One of the shader param generators has an option to enable chameleon. Then just go to game mode. From what I can tell it was supposed to use the probe or socom environment map tinted by the surrounding colors. Or something. Anyway it was buggy so I ended up making my own chameleon effect.

To answer some of the questions asked:
Technically, the shader is opaque since I force the alpha channel off.
But since it is shaded the same color as what's on the other side of the suit it might as well be transparent. I'm playing around with altering the texture coordinates but then I end up with too much sky color on the suit and I don't like the way that looks.

lol, I don't know about anyone else, but that didn't really answer anything for me...mainly because I don't know what the heck is going on looks cool, though. do you have to actually stop moving for a bit and slowly start to blend in with your environment? that's the type of cloak I want, one that doesn't allow people to pop in and out of invisibility at will.

It's a chameleon effect. It's taking the textures behind or around nomad (or really anywhere on the screen depending on what texture coordinates I use) and applying that as a texture to his suit. I don't know if it's possible to introduce a delay and I wouldn't know how. Then again, this isn't complete invisibility anyway. Just an active camoflauge. This is my first major attempt at shader hackery and it's being done via text editing instead of using something like Composer. @Giallo, yeah, sorry, I'll see about some more screenshots. edit: Tried to get a shot of the chameleon effect on a snow level, but it isn't working when the frozen layer shaders are on
