Post Topic: Finnish Army Rk-62 [re-texture]

Being in the army, I carry this gun all the time. Having such a good real-world reference, I decided to model it during the weekends when I get some free time.

Heres some information about the weapon.
The RK-62 (rynnäkkökivääri-62) is an assault rifle intended for use by the Finnish army as a soldiers personal weapon. The RK-62 has been in production since 1962. Designed to withstand extreme weather conditions of nordic europe, the RK-62 has proven itself as a high quality assault rifle, and is still in service today. The rifle has a pinhole diopter sight for daytime use and an open tritium sight for better nighttime aiming. The RK-62 fires the 7.62x39mm round making it far more powerful than for example the US M4 service rifle.

What I can personally say is that It's amazingly accurate, being able to fit 10 shots on a palm-sized area from 150 meters, especially considering I'm not exactly a professional marksman. It's also a very sturdy weapon, and annoyingly heavy during combat exercises. (although that might be due to me being too weak rather than the gun being too heavy)

As for the model, I've been working on it for 3 weekends now, and the highpoly is pretty much complete. I have a 4 day training camp next week during which ill try to take some reference pics to fix minor inaccuracies in the model. After that i'll get on with making a low poly and baking etc.

Really nice work! :)
I'm very familiar with the weapon after serving with it for a year.

One thing I noticed on the otherwise perfect model: the tap on the slide should be higher.
Like in this pic: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/c ... _62_76.jpg

Keep up the good work.

Hmmm... quite convincing, but magazine appears a bit large. A picture directly from the side would give better view about the proportions. On the other hand, i think the plastic magazine is slightly bigger compared to the metallic one in the version i used to sleep with. It had also different front grip, but otherwise model looks like the trusty "rynkky"

Nurrti: now that you mention it, it does look quite small. will enlargen it next weekend.

The Vulture: Well the current plan is to use this to learn how to rig for ce3 properly, and I see no reason not to release it when im done.

Talvipakkanen: ah yes you probably had the older version with the front grip that had holes and ribs.. mines a valmet 1986 model which has the smooth front grip and some other minor differences. As for the magazine's size, I used this as a blueprint and according to that the magazine is about the right size, so it could just be the perspective.

Youpala: ooooookaaaayy *moves away a bit*

and thanks to the rest of you for the nice comments.

A familiar weapon, and a very clean-looking HP. I've been requesting this for a long time whenever any modeler asksd for suggestions - I think someone even started once - but I'm hoping you'll release this one! :)

Quick update to conclude tonight's session.

Finally got the Low poly and UV map finished, and also both normals and AO baked.
Here are two quick renders I made with the 100% unedited bakes (meaning they're not perfect, yet)

Will get started on the texture tomorrow.

The sights and the muzzle look pretty detailed for a low-poly, where does the polycount stand at the moment? The bake looks very clean already, I didn't spot any mistakes. :)
