Seems that I got it working after following
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZ-uA18uc5c.
But still it isn't actually what I wanted... I mean the animation is working but how can I make an another object to trigger it? For example a button to trigger the animation for this object?
For this you can use flowgraphing, it shouldn't be too hard to get a grasp of doing something like that.

Another thing is that I'd love to start modelling characters/creatures. How does it differ from objects? I've heard that it's a lot more complex to create a character model & animate it than objects. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find tutorials for modelling & animating the character for CryEngine3.
Animating characters models is much more complex because you are using bones, for example if you move the hand the whole arm needs to move in relation. If you have 3DS max you can use a biped to animate a character, which is the easiest way for me personally, there's tons of biped tutorials out there on Youtube.
Animating animals like horses etc are even more complex and require alot of knowledge of animating for it to look realistic.
