Post Topic: My Weapon Models Posted 11.05.2012, 22:31 |
Here are a few weapon models I have created over the past week: HK G36-K Colt M1911.jpg) Both are not all the way finished yet, they still need the small details and animations.

.jpg) So, this model is pretty much done, except I want to add a chromed, shiny texture to it. Can I get some tips on how to do this?

I used a reference image for this, I just haven't done any small detail work.

I'm sorry, but they look like cardboard cutouts at the moment. A model is not only the side, it also has depth, and that is what your models currently lack. I suggest you take a good look at the reference pictures, and discern what it is you are modeling... Keep working at it though, and I'm sure you'll get there

Lol this is the second thing I've ever modelled...

It's pretty good for your second model however like un_dead said it seems like you simply drew the outline of the weapon then extruded it. Although this can be effective for some situations it doesn't produce a very convincing model. Maybe try and follow a tutorial based on the software you are using to help you learn the tools and how to effectively use them in order to create great looking models. The earlier you learn how to model correctly and efficiently the better.

I didn't just extrude the whole thing at once. I gave individual parts different depths and angled edges like the real thing. Ya, it's still crappy, but I didn't just draw an outline and thicken it a bit.

One of the first things you ever modeled? The first thing I modeled was a fence or something, and it looked horrible... Your models look really nice though. Once you add little details in zbrush or mudbox, along with nice textures, these should turn out nicely.

What do you do with zbrush and mudbox? I've never used them before.

They're both sculpting programs. You can get a free 30-day trial of ZBrush here: www.zbrush.comAnd Mudbox is pretty much the same, if anything, less complex... If you are a student, you can download it here for free: www.students.autodesk.com

Also Instead of using Blender, you may want to use either Autodesk Maya or 3DS Max, also available from www.students.autodesk.comHowever if you wish to go commercial with your product you will need to purchase the full licenses.

From my experience (which is somewhat limited) I find the best way to model hard surface models is through the use of extensively modifying primitives. When I started trying to model guns I thought the best way would be to draw the outline of different parts of the gun and extrude them, the issue with this is that it can make it difficult to add detail to the weapon since you have limited control of the topology. Below I have found a tutorial for blender that teaches you how to make a revolver, I recommend you at least take a look at the tutorial, it should give you some ideas on how to help with your modelling. http://cgcookie.com/blender/2011/09/06/ ... -revolver/Best of luck!

I really suggest this, your gun does look like it was built on a 2d plane, and extruded. But I think your are definitely getting there!
